Prof. Surapol Issaragrisil obtained his medical doctor degree from Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in 1974, Experimental Hematology fellowship from University of Ulm in 1983, and clinical fellowship from University of Washington in 1985. He is an expert and internationally well-known specialist in hematology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. He pioneered to use cord blood stem cells to cure thalassemia for the first time. He is at present the Emeritus Professor at Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, the Director of Chulabhorn Bone Marrow Transplant Center, the Director of Siriraj Center of Excellence for Stem Cell Research, Mahidol University, the President of the Thai Society for Stem Cell Research, and the President of the Royal Society of Thailand.
