PROJECTS OF THE IUA

67. China and the Mediterranean World :
Archaeological sources and written documents up to the 10th Century

The IUA has decided to launch this project (in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and any academy who would like to participate). The aim of the project is to produce a series of volumes, which will demonstrate the mutual knowledge of the respective cultures during these periods, the mutual relations between them and influence they exerted on each other. The time frame shall be from ancient times until the Tang Dynasty in China.

Volumes shall be produced which document mutual contacts and influence, but there shall also be publications containing studies of more synthetic character.

Concrete tasks shall be (i) to collect a corpus of European, Chinese and Central Asian texts, which contain references to the other culture, and publish these in their original as well in translations into Chinese, English and French; (ii) to publish archaeological charts of objects from one culture found in another culture: silver and gold objects, pottery ceramics, silk, numismatic objects etc.; (iii) to produce synthetic studies of cultural, religious, philosophical, social and linguistic influence of one culture upon the other.

This project was adopted by the IUA in 2004 as a category B Project.
