66. Comparative history of literatures in European languages

The International Comparative Literature Association considers that the literary movements and the forms of the literary works can only be totally understood in an international context. That is why the Association has charged the Coordinating Committee to constitute an international history of literatures' library. Until now the collection is strictly limited to European languages, in Europe and out Europe, regarding to the immensity of the task and the limits of the competences.

Each volume or set of volumes is to consider one clearly demarcated and definable aspect of literature in European languages - a period (Renaissance), tred (Mannerism), movement (Expressionism), zone (sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America) or mode (irony) - from a truly international perspective and in a genuinely comparative manner. The approach taken in each case may be historical, critical, theoretical, or a combination of these.

This project, proposed by the International Comparative Literature Association, was adopted by the IUA as Category C project in 2004.
