PROJECTS OF THE IUA

The correspondence of Ioannes Dantiscus (1485-1548) is a very important group of manuscript sources regarding European and Polish Renaissance and Humanism in the first half of the XVI century. Although Dantiscus' correspondance has interested scholars since XVIII century, its major part remains unpublished.

Now the work on the issue of Dantiscus' correspondence is pursued by the Center for Studies on the Classical Tradition in Poland and East-Central Europe (Warsaw University).

The interdisciplinarity team of philologists and historians directed by Prof. Dr. Jerzy Axer and Dr. Anna Skolimowska and collaborating with scholars from Germany, Spain, Great Britain, Belgium, Sweden and Italy prepares the computer data-base containing the inventory of all the documents (manuscripts and prints) of that correspondence. Simultaneously we conduct other editorial works on that enormous collection of manuscript sources, intending its publication as a series Corpus Epistolarum Ioannis Dantisci. The series will consist of the following volumes :

• Part I - Ioannis Dantisci Epistulae (5 volumes) : this part will include Latin letters (about 500) by this eminent diplomat, humanist and neolatin poet. Nearly all the letters he had written after the year 1536 have not been published yet.

• Part II - Amicorum sermones mutui (not less than 5 volumes) : this part will involve the correspondance between Dantiscus and some of his frinds (Sigismundus Herberstein, Alfonso Valdes, Mercurino Gattinara , Cornelius de Schepper, ...).

• Part III - Illustrium virorum epistulae (2 volumes) : this part will contain two very special volumes of original manuscript letters bound separately at Dantiscus' special order.

• Part IV - Inventarium (6 volumes) : this part will comprise about 12 000 manuscript documents of Dantiscus correspondence, wich will provide the scholars wich such information as signature, incipit, datas about its sender and adressee, place and date of its sending and receiving, information about its previous prints.

The project was adopted by the UAI in Category C in 2003 on the initiative of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.
