PROJECTS OF THE IUA 61. Le monde scytho-sarmate et la
civilisation gréco-romaine |
|
The study of the relations between the Greco-roman world and their neighbours has always been one the most promising domain of the antiquity sciences. The problem of the relationships between Greeks and the world of the steppes occupied in the Antiquity by Iranian nomads (Scythians, Sarmatians etc.) is not an exception. These contacts began immediately after the foundation of the first Greek colonies in the Pontic region (second half of VIIth century BC) and remain active until the end of the Greco-roman civilization. The urban civilization met a totally different culture: the nomad pastors'. The consequence of these contacts was the formation, in this region, of a unique culture reuniting elements from different origins. This project's aim is to co-ordinate the international research in different fields (history, archeology, philology, linguistics, etc.) related to the study problems of the Scytho-Sarmatian world and his relations with the Greco-roman civilization. The project includes archaeological excavations of not well-known monuments of Scythian, Sarmatian and Greco-Roman cultures in Russia and Ukraine. The study and publication of the material coming from the old excavations is not less important. Many discoveries of considerable scientific importance that are in the Russian and Ukrainian museums are not yet published and remain unknown by the scholars. This project, presented by the Russian academy of Sciences, was adopted by the IUA as a Category C project in 2001 Director: M. Gregory M. Bongard-Levin 2001- |
