PROJECTS OF THE IUA

60. Norse-Icelandic Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages

The general objective of the project is the production of a new edition of the large corpus of Old Norse-Icelandic skaldic poetry from Middle Ages, which is extant in mainly Icelandic and Norwegian manuscripts, located in a number of European libraries. It will be a critical edition with an English translation that will appear in book and electronic form. It will include six source categories: Kings' Sagas (9th-13th. centuries), "poetological" works, historical works on Iceland, Sagas of Icelanders, miscellany, complete poems not preserved in a prose context and runic poems.

The project, proposed by the Australian Academy of the Humanities, was adopted as a Category C project in 2001.
