51. Monumenta Palaeographica Medii Aevi

The Monumenta Palaeographica Medii Aevi, in publishing documents from the European Middle Ages, has two aims in mind : there is first of all a scholarly purpose to be served, and then a rescue operation, in the shape of full-size facsimiles which will help to preserve the traditions of handwriting that Europe has inherited.

In the countries of Eastern Europe, there is at present a very lively concern with national origins, and scholars are markedly interested in their earliest surviving archives. These Latin documents are akin to their contemporaries in Western Europe. The Corpus will supply important comparative material and will contribute to the recognition of a common basis of culture, public administration and law. It will interest literary and linguistic scholars as well as experts in literary and documentary palaeography, and perhaps also epigraphists.

The project was presented by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and adopted by the UAI in Category C in 1995.
