37. Corpus of coptic literary manuscripts

The project started in 1970 with the aim of assembling microfilms of all existing Coptic literary manuscripts, in order to facilitate the identification of their contents and the publication of the Coptic literary texts. It was recommended by the Association Internationale de Papyrologues (International Association of Papyrologists : Oxford Congress, 1974) and by the International Association for Coptic Studies : Cairo Congress, 1976.

By 1995, the photographic archives can be regarded as virtually complete. They can be studied by visitors in the room assigned to the Corpus inside the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum in Rome. A Coptic Bibliography has been published annually since 1982. Each year, it contains a numbered list of all the publications recorded, with indexes (by author and by subject), and there are two fascicles of new articles. The Corpus project also maintains a database of Coptic manuscripts, collections and texts, which can be consulted via Internet. The most important unedited texts are included in a series produced by the project and published by CIM in Rome.

The project obtained the patronage of the UAI in 1979 in Category C, on the initiative of the Unione Accademica Nazionale.
