36c. Atlas of the language of Korea |
|
|
The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea established a committee responsible for the production of a linguistic atlas of Korea. The committee consisted of six specialists in dialectology and about ten research assistants. The committee envisaged finishing its work in a few years, considering that the study of the dialects of the Korean language was well advanced in Korea and that the model provided by the LAPA already published (especially the dialect map of Japan included in it) was very useful for the production of a satisfactory result. It should be pointed out, at the same time, that this project did not only cover the southern part of Korea but also its northern part, thanks to the studies carried out before the division of the country. This project was submitted by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea at the 1987 General Assembly of the UAI, with the request that it constitute a continuation of the LAPA and the Language Atlas of China, and form the third part of the project. The UAI agreed to the proposition and adopted this project in Category C. The atlas was published in 1993 by Sunji Munhwasa, Seoul. The Atlas of the Language of Korea is under the patronage of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea and its directors are the six specialists in dialectology mentioned above. |
