PROJECTS OF THE IUA

34. Complete works of Voltaire

This project has as its objective a complete critical edition of the works of Voltaire, including his correspondence ; it was initiated in 1970 by T. Besterman. Since Besterman's death in 1976, until 1993, the project has been under the direction of a committee headed by W.H. Barber under the sponsorship of the British Academy. Since 1993, the Director has been U. Kölving. Some 120 scholars in a dozen different countries have been contributing to this major effort, editing one or more of the writings of Voltaire either individually or in collaboration.

The project has already resulted in the publication of a substantial number of volumes, and there are more in preparation or in course of production, the present rate of publication being three volumes per year. The volumes are published by the Voltaire foundation of the University of Oxford.

The project was adopted as a Category C project in 1978 on the initiative of the British Academy.
