The project of the Corpus Inscriptionum Iranicarum (CII) started in 1951 by
resolution of the XXIInd International Congress of Orientalists with the support of the
Iranian Govemment and the financial assistance of CIPSH and UNESCO. The scope of the CII
is rather large : Part I comprises inscriptions of Ancient Iran, i.e. Old Persian
inscriptions together with Neo-Babylonian, Elamite, Hieroglyphic Egyptian and Aramaic
versions of the Achaemenian inscriptions; Part II will contain inscriptions of the
Seleucid and Parthian periods and those of Eastern Iran and Central Asia (i.e.
inscriptions in non-Iranian languages and Parthian, Sogdian, Khwarezmian, Saka, Bactrian
inscriptions and documents); Part III includes Middle Persian and Parthian inscriptions,
'ostraca', papyri, and seals of the Sassanian period as well as the Kushano-Sassanian
seals and coin legends ; Part IV is destined for Persian inscriptions down to the Early
Safavid period. The CII consists of portfolios and text volumes as well as of a
supplementary series.
The CII was adopted by the UAI in 1973 as a Category C project. Its official affiliation
with the UAI continues through the intermediary of the British Academy.
