PROJECTS OF THE IUA 26. Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum (SNG) |
|
The purpose of this project is to publish Greek coins in public and private collections. It is necessary to understand the concept of 'Greek coins' in the widest possible sence : it includes ancient coins from the Atlantic coast to the northwest of India, from the origin of Greek coinage (approx. 600 BC) until the late 3rd century A.D., including the coinage of the Greek cities under the Roman Empire (Greek Imperials). The Sylloge fascicules are published in folio format or, since 1984, mostly in A4 format. The volumes contain a varying number of plates with facing description giving appropriate references and a maximum of information without lenghty discussions of particular problems. A brief preface with details on the collection is often included. In short, the project aims at a presentation of source material. The SNG was
launched by the British Academy as a project of national character in 1930, but gradually
an increasing number of other countries have joined the project. Directed by the British Academy and the International Numismatic Commission. Directors : P. Naster 1972-1986, U. Westermark 1986-1997, H. Nilsson 1997- Web sites related to greek coins : |
