PROJECTS OF THE IUA

21. The collected works of Erasmus

The aim of this project is to make available a critical and annotated edition of the Opera Omnia of Desiderius Erasmus.

In 1969 appeared volume 1/1, 30 volumes have been published since that time. The entire work will be published in approximately 45 volumes. The introductions and commentaries are in English, French, or German. The order in which the works are presented is not chronological : it is based on a division into categories ('ordines') which Erasmus himself laid down for the publication of his complete works.

In 1963 the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen convened an international group of experts; the participants constituted themselves as the Conseil international pour l'édition des oeuvres complètes d'Erasme (International Council for the Editing of the Complete Works of Erasmus). The Council, which has now 20 members, and the Editorial Board hold regular meetings, usually in Rotterdam. The Dutch members of the Council, together with the Secretariat, are entrusted with the management of current business.

The project was adopted by the UAI in 1964 on the initiative of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (Constantijn Huygens Institute), as a Category C project.
