20. Corpus Antiquitatum Americanensium
(former Corpus of Pre-Colombian Antiquities)

The object of the Corpus Antiquitatum Americanensium is to promote the publication of a catalogue of all the collections of Pre-Colombian antiquities preserved in the different museums of America and Europe. The project envisages producing a working tool, i.e. each volume is intended to comprise: 1) an introduction containing an historical account of the collection and the geographical origins and degree of reliability, 2) a descriptive portion which should not exceed one page per object ; the interpretation should be clearly separated from the descriptive portion, 3) illustrations: all objects should be photographed, 4) a selective bibliography.

The project Corpus of Pre-Colombian Antiquities was launched by the Consejo Mexicano de Instituciones Humanísticas (Mexican Council of Humanistic Institutions) and adopted by the UAI in 1962 as a Category C project. Since 1975, the project fonctions through a double editorial committee, one for America and one for Europe.

The project is directed on the American side by the Mexican Council of Humanistic Institutions. Directors : I. Bernal 1962-1980, J. Litvak-King 1981-1982, M. Foncerrada de Molina 1983-1988, R. Eder 1992-
