PROJECTS OF THE IUA 15. Sumerian and Assyrian dictionaries |
|
The Chicago Assyrian Dictionary (CAD) project was initiated by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago in 1921. Now close to completion, it presents the vocabulary of Akkadian (also known as Assyro-Babylonian) in extensive references representing a meaningful section of the word's context so as to determine and illustrate the semantic range of each word. The CAD informs Assyriologists as well as a wide range of readers, serving both as a dictionary and as an encyclopaedia by illustrating the culture of ancient Mesopotamia. The time span covered ranges from the late third millennium to 100 A.D., and the texts excerpted come from sites in ancient Mesopotamia and beyond up to the Mediterranean. The CAD will be published in 21 volumes. The publication began in 1956 and 16 volumes have been published up to now. The CAD was adopted as a Category C project by the UAI in 1951 and its official affiliation with the UAI continues through the intermediary of the American Council of Learned Societies.
