The Encyclopaedia of Islam sets out the present state of our knowledge of the Islamic world. It embraces articles on distinguished Muslims of every age and land, on tribes and dynasties, on the crafts and sciences, on political and religious institutions, on the geography, ethnography, flora and fauna of the various countries and on the history, topography and monuments of the major towns and cities. There are also articles dealing with religious, philosophical and scientific terminology-indeed with every facet of Islamic culture from the time of the Prophet to the present day. As to its geographical and historical scope, the Encyclopaedia of Islam comprises the old Arabo-Islamic Empire, the Islamic states of Iran, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia, the Ottoman Empire and the various Muslim states and communities throughout the world. The New Edition is published in double fascicles of 128 pages. About ten double fascicles make up one volume. The work, including the Supplements, is expected to be completed in eleven to twelve volumes. At the moment, the letter S is being published.
