PROJECTS OF THE IUA

11a. Concordances and indexes of the Islamic tradition

This project has as its aim the compilation of an alphabetical index of the six canonical books of the Islamic tradition, supplemented by three books which are regarded as equally important by the Muslims. The alphabetical index, or Concordance, is to comprise all the words which appear in the nine books of traditions and is to be followed by indexes of proper names, geographical names and citations from the Quran.

With the publication of volume VII, the Concordance of the Islamic tradition was completed in 1969. Work on the indexes began in 1972. It was decided to omit the proper names of the isnads. The index of geographical names, as well as the index of citations from the Quran are already completed.

It was in 1916 that the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen took the initiative for the project, and the UAI adopted it in 1932 as a Category C project.
