PROJECTS OF THE IUA

10a. Codices Latini Antiquiores (CLA)
and
10b. Chartae Latinae Antiquiores (ChLA)

The series Chartae Latinae Antiquiores was established in 1953 by A. Bruckner and R. Marichal to supplement the Codices Latini Antiquiores of E.A. Lowe. The CLA constitutes a photographic catalogue of all Latin 'literary' manuscripts which antedate AD 800. It was necessary to provide a codicological description of each one of them and a photograph of some lines. The ChLA constitutes a catalogue of all Latin documents written on papyrus or parchment which antedate AD 800. It was possible and, at the same time, necessary to provide full reproductions of them, accompanied by critical remarks. The first volume appeared in 1954 ; the 49th and last volume was published in 1997. They contain the documents preserved in Switzerland, Great Britain, United States, Germany, France, Italy, Egypt ; the publication of the documents preserved in Austria is at present under way. For the volumes containing these, A. Bruckner and R. Marichal have requested the collaboration of H. Atsma, J. Vezin, A. Petrucci, J.-O. Tjäder and T. Dorandi. The language of the first four volumes was, as is the case with the CLA, English, and after that the language of the editors, i.e. German, French or Italian, was used.

The first project was adopted by the UAI in 1930, on the initiative of the American Council of Learned Societies, as a Category C project. Director: E.A. Lowe 1930-1969.

The second project was adopted by the UAI in 1958, on the initiative of the Académie suisse des Sciences Humaines as a Category C project. Directors: A. Bruckner and R. Marichal 1958-1985, R. Marichal 1985-1993, H. Atsma and J. Vezin 1993-1997.
